10/02/10 - Water project helps 600 villagers
MORE than 600 villagers in Navutu Village, Nadroga have clean drinking water thanks to Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation.
Foundation director Joel Sahai said the project involved digging a borehole, installing a pump and two 10,000 litre tanks, and laying the pipes.
"All the work was completed at a cost of $20,000," he said. The village is located on the Queen's Highway near Lomawai.
Mr Sahai said in the past, the villagers had to walk several metres to collect and take it back to their homes for cooking, cleaning and washing.
Established in August 2007, the Foundation has been helping rural communities throughout Fiji in providing sustainable and safe drinking water.
"To date it has around 84 completed projects costing $955,000 and benefiting around 29,950 people, with 130 more developing projects on Viti Levu, Yasawas, Kadavu, Vanua Levu and other islands," Mr Sahai said.
He said these projects were a partnership between the Foundation and the settlement or village.
He said the Foundation provided the funding and the villages assisted with labour input in the construction and installation.
